Yankees in Last Place

Speaking of pissing things away, or not getting what you pay for, the Yankees have fallen into a last place in the American League East after losing to Tampa Bay last night.

The Yankees have the highest payroll in baseball, but are only 11-18. Only Cincinnati, Colorado and Kansas City have worse records, and while I don't have the figures handy, I would bet that the combined payroll of those three teams might barely eclipse the Yankees' $200M.

I have May 7 in the "Joe Torre Gets Fired" pool.

I feel really bad for the Yankees. I emphasize with the pain that Yankee fans are going through.

(pause)

NOT!!!!!!!

They are definitely underachieving and have shown that $200+ million does not always buy the best team. There's a lot of age on that team, and while there's a lot of talent on that club, the sum has been a lot less than the parts.

When the Yankees won from 1996-2000, they actually had a lot of homegrown talent (Pettitte, Rivera, Soriano, Jeter, B. Williams) and had guys with a lot of intensity and determination (Paul O'Neill, Scott Brosius).

Now, they have a bunch of overpaid, over-the-hill guys in Kevin Brown, Jason Giambi, Tony Womack. And their defense has been poor. Bernie Williams is just a shell of his former self. And for all the numbers that Alex Rodriguez puts up, he hasn't shown that he can produce in big games.

It's still a long season, and I do think the Yankees will win a lot more. But even before the season started, they do not have the best team in baseball, only the most expensive.

it is difficult being perfect but the yankee franchise is as close as one can get. the most productive franchise in any sport. the dislike of the yankees is the result of our consistent perfection. whether we have a bad year or good year the yankees will always be the team to beat. under-performance happens in sports, business and in life, but the fact remains the yankees will regain their superiority whether in 2005 or not and remain the class organization and team for the centuries. enjoy the time while we are underperforming but the tide will change the yankees as always will number one.

If you were half as attentive to your grammar as you are to your hatred of a baseball team, you would know the word that you want is not "emphasize"; it is "empathize" But, who cares, right?

i realized my error AFTER i had posted. unfortunately, once you post, you can't go back and edit. thanks, anyway. besides, my grammar was still better than the anonymous post.

explain how my original post shows my "hatred" of the yankees?!?! i don't feel sorry for a franchise that has won 26 world series. the same way that most fans do not feel sorry for the lakers, red wings, southern cal football, duke basketball. think about fans of teams that have yet to win it all.

"They are definitely underachieving..." - well, they are. a team with a $200 million payroll that is mired in last place is not playing up to its potential

i am merely stating what i observe. i gave the '96-'00 teams their due credit, but as for THIS year's team, they are indeed an aging, overpriced team. period.

They will be back. If not this year in a short while. Don't write them off.Just like Notre Dame.

jerry,

purely as an fyi, according to sportscenter, the *combined* payrolls of cincy, colorado, and kansas city equal $144 M, or about $64 M less than the yankees' payroll.

For all you malcontents out there, Let's make Jeff VanGundy the new Yankee Manager.

Those three are $64M short of the Yankees? I almost threw Tampa (the team they're tied with) on the list, but I figured that would put the group over $200 for sure, but now I'm just as sure it wouldn't.

Nice to hear from some new folks!
