There are more questions than answers surrounding the kidnapping in Iraq of Jeffrey Ake, 47, of LaPorte, IN.
He was shown on April 13th on a video on al-Jazeera holding his passport, with guns pointed at his head, begging for his life and asking the U.S. to open negotiations with Iraqi insurgents. His family pretty much went into seclusion at that point, which isn't terribly unusual.
What is unusual is that he is the first hostage to be forced to make a request that the U.S. negotiate with insurgents. Also, there wasn't any sign of the usual religious symbols or language in the video. So perhaps this is a different group of people behind this kidnapping.
Also strange is that his family asked that a prayer vigil the following day be cancelled just hours before it was to occur. No reason was given for cancelling the vigil (though I doubt prayerful people need a vigil to pray).
There had been no news about this story at all for the last two weeks until today, when it was reported that his family (he has a wife and four children) has put their house up for sale. Once again, nobody is commenting on this.
I don't know what to make of all this, but something doesn't seem right about this story.

Hmm. I must have missed this on the news today. Some news junkie i am!! Was it only in print or did channel 7 just not find it interesting enough for air? I've not opened the Times yet today, perhaps i should do that. Thanks for the odd info. I had been wondering if it was just me who had noticed the story had been mysteriously dropped like a hot-cake? I was confused when the prayer vigil was canceled because either way, those who pray would pray for a safe return or for a loss, right? And now property for sale?? Ummm, i'm smelling something hinkey and for once it's not an oil spill...
Blog on.
I saw it in the Times in a little blurb on page 3 of the local section.
I don't watch TV news unless I'm following some major event, and then it's one of the cable outlets like CNN. I can't tell you the last time I watched one of the Chicago TV news programs.
Not sure how you found me, but come back again some time.
Hi there...i'm back.
You must be in Lake Co? I'm in Porter so the Ake story was on page one of our Friday Edition. I'm curious to know if the two articles held the same information? Did yours mention the property value and the whole family's property worth?
Interesting bit on 7 last night and again this am. Digging up some bones near 139th & Jeffery, i think it is, so far they're thinking it to be the remains of a child, maybe two? There's a PI speculating that maybe it's the two Bradley sisters who've been missing for 2-3 years now. Hmm. I guess we'll see.
Ok, on to your favorite topic...do you talk DePaul basketball? I know i should've gone to Purdue like my Dad wanted me to, but alas...i went to DePaul. Any insight on that coaching shakeup? I must've missed the beginning of it. Did Leitao just want a change or was it an administration choice?
You know, i really miss listening to Chicago radio. I gave up on it. I lived out of State from '97-'00 and when i came back i just couldn't find anything i liked to listen to. I sure do miss that sports show that Les Grobstein used to do...and i miss having Pat & Dale on the radio for Hawks games, uhhh...when there are games. Any listening suggestions would be appreciated.
I honestly don't remember how i found your blog, i hate that. I either caught a link on someone else's or used the "next blog" button and stumbled upon it. At any rate, i'm glad i did. :)
Blog on.
I am in Lake County. We just got two paragraphs, so it sounds like we didn't get the level of detail you did. I'll have to check out the Times website.
In a sense, I hope those are the remains of the two sisters. At least that family could finally have some closure. At some point, even bad news is better than no news.
I think DePaul made a good choice with Wainwright. Leitao moved up by going to Virginia, and DePaul was never going to be anything more than a stepping stone for him. Wainwright has some Chicago roots and is the kind of guy who will be happy finishing his career at DePaul. He's been pretty successful at his previous stops, but winning at DePaul in the Big East will be a tough challenge.
The only sports talk radio I listen to is Sports Central on WGN radio with Dave Kaplan and Tom Waddle. They are the only guys in town who talk college sports with any regularity. I'm as big of a Cubs, Sox, Bears fan as anybody, but in March, I don't want to hear about the Bears draft prospects. I want to hear about The Tournament.
I also miss Pat and Dale, but not so much the games they cover. Pat Foley is the best hockey play-by-play guy I've heard, but that's not a lengthy list. He used to help keep me awake on sleepy drives home from Lafayette during the year that my wife (fiance then) was still in school and I had already graduated. It's hard to doze off when Pat is screaming "he SCOOOOOOORES!" in a voice that sounds like puberty had instantly set in.
